Independent Filipina Woman: A New Journey of Anne Curtis

by Valerie Tort

Anne CurtisBefore judging her as shattering the one-woman-man phrase, Anne Curtis is a brave woman who fought for her own independence under harsh camera lights of Philippine showbiz.

The half-Filipina half-Australian ABSCBN talent showed who she is even off camera. “Basically, I am a ‘what you see is what you get’ woman. I don’t put up any front or act for other people to adore me. I do not believe in hiding or proving anything and that, I think, is what makes me somewhat controversial in the showbiz.”

“I can make mistakes. It’s all part of growing up,” Anne added. She is not bothered or afraid of having slip-ups once in a while. Being independent means learning from your own experiences.

Anne has been in the show biz industry for 10 years. She did numerous product endorsements from high-profile companies such as Ginebra San Miguel and Head and Shoulders shampoo commercials under Procter & Gamble Philippines, and other photo shoots for glossy magazine covers. She also appeared in numerous TV series, soap opera, and Philippine primetime shows including her ongoing project Maging Sino Ka Man with Bea Alonzo, John Lloyd Cruz, and Sam Milby. She also starred in several movies, with her latest movie under Star Cinema titled ‘Ang Cute ng Ina Mo.’

With all her hardships since she was 12, and her Australian upbringing somehow contributed to her modern outlook in life—a woman of strength, character, and personality.

The cultural differences between Australia and the Philippines are highlighted by Anne as ‘somewhat restricted in terms of the daughters of the family.’ In Australia, daughters can go to school using their bikes, without any worry for the parents. “We live on the outskirts of Melbourne, in the countryside, away from urbanized and contemporary living. I had a happy childhood. I rode my bike to school and I enjoyed doing the daily household chores. It was so much fun,” she said. In the Philippines, daughters are fetched or even rode in school buses for safety purposes.

In her long stay in the country, Anne has adapted certain Filipino characteristics and traditions, but not foregoing the independence a woman must possess. “Well, I have to say that I am more Filipino now. The only thing that’s Australian about me is my childhood and my accent. Since I live here now, I’m more Filipina. When I go back to Australia, it seems that I’m learning things all over again.”

The half-Aussie and half-Pinoy beauty resided in Australia with her father, James Curtis, and transferred residence here in the Philippines when she was in her teenage years. “I am so happy that I’m here. If I were in Australia I’d have been in a boarding school! My dad was strict when it came to education. He kept on dissuading me when I tried doing TV commercials, claiming that they are just swindling me to dodge school.”

She finished her seventh grade in the Philippines so her father was worried that she may dump school and do modeling full-time. The thought of ditching school never entered in her mind. She even planned to finish her tertiary year in Australia after graduating at College of Mount Carmel in Parañaque City and be a pre-school teacher afterwards.

Philippine actress Anne Curtis It started her independence since she’s able to decide for herself even if her father was discouraging her to go into modeling or even showbiz. But she continued to shine in her own little way by participating in various teen roles in movies and TV series in her adolescent years.

And this independence was always translated as being a stubborn or even an image of a ‘playgirl.’ “Well, I guess that’s the remaining false impression about me for five years now. I’ve learned to live with it, but I want to demonstrate people incorrect who suppose that big lie. They declare that I have two boyfriends at one fell swoop but on no account that had happened, I swear. I go on dates, yes, but at the end of the day I’m just a normal teenager,” Anne explained.

People knew her as a party girl enjoying all night with her liberated friends at the trendiest and hippest bars in the metro, and someone who is not serious about life and takes all the challenge, even with hooking up with other men. “I’m not really super pa-sweet but I can be in certain aspects. Bit I’m not the super all-out bad girl rin naman.

“I guess everyone goes through that stage when finally you are free of your boyfriend and enjoying yourself. But not to a point that if ever I have feelings for someone else, I’ll date him. I’ll break up with my boyfriend first before entertaining a suitor. I never cheat because I believe in karma. My God! Even if I finished work at three in the morning, I’d still take time to go out with the friends. But not anymore, I’m too tired,” she confessed.

In her public life, there will always be a misconception especially the Filipinos who are not used to seeing and being with independent woman. The tradition and values of a historical age somehow remained in our minds. Gossips and canard stories will surely be around as a result of the Filipino way of thinking.

“I hate people who are liars and who are not true people. I hate that. I hate tsismis even though I know it is part of the job being an actress, but what I do not like is when it’s dirty tsismis. I don’t let it get to me. Just as long as the people who are really close to me know who I really am, that’s what matters.”

People vary in how they define and put the word independence into context. Anne made herself clear at what independence of a woman is: “I think kahit papaano you still have to be independent in your own way by still working to have her own money for herself, working to buy her personal needs, and toiling for other things just to spoil herself. That is how a girl should be independent.”

She enjoys her hard-earned Victorian-inspired mansion near Laguna de Bay as the fruit of her 10-year labor in the showbiz industry.

“I live alone in my house, which I just finished paying. I want to enjoy my house kasi pinaghirapan ko ‘yon. My savings from the 10 years I’ve been in showbiz went into that house so I really treasure it. Everytime I walk into that house, parang ayoko nang lumabas pa.”

That is how Anne Curtis treated her life for her personal and career growth—an independent Anne that still is shining on.

Sheryl Cruz Shines The Second Time Around

By Phoebe Dorothy Estelle

Sheryl CruzTaking her Philippine showbiz glitter to another level, former teen star Sheryl Cruz is back with more appealing and offbeat roles. After her special participation in “Mulawin,” in 2004, projects came pouring in on her.

Being a member of “Triplets” (with Kristina Paner and Manilyn Reynes) and part of a popular love team in the 80s to mid 90s, Sheryl was secluded to teenybopper, good girl and cutie–cutie roles. She got meaty projects when she decided to be a freelancer. But instead of continuing her flourishing career, Sheryl migrated to United States with her family and was out of the limelight for eight years.

But she didn’t have to resort to gimmicks when she decided to enliven her showbiz career anew. The former Regal Baby involved herself in doing movies and drama series. She starred in “Mano Po 3: My Love” and featured was twice in afternoon program “Now & Forever.” However, her role as the ambitious and scheming Valeria in the TV series Bakekang sealed here newfound fame.

Her eight-year hiatus, indeed, has been a great help in honing her craft and personality.

“I’d learned to depend on my self more. The Philippines is very different from States,” Sheryl said. “Of course, it’s part of our family na ang mga help natin dito, they do a lot of things for you. I’m proud to say na during my time in the US I learned not to be very needy na every time ‘pakikuha ito, pakikuha iyan.’ I do help around the house and I do clean the house.”

Sheryl is the only daughter of the late Ricky Belmonte and former actress Rosemarie Sonora (sister of Susan Roces). She’s married to Norman Bustos, a sheriff in California and mother to Ashley. The singer-actress professed that she’s blessed for having them in her life.

“Thanking Lord for he given me good parents, a good family, and a good education. Naturuan akong makisama sa mga tao whether mayaman or mahirap sila. Alam ko kung saan ko ilalagay ang sarili ko. Maraming salamat din sa naibigay na impluwensiya ng aking asawa. It was through him that I learned you can enjoy your life but that time is so precious. Kailangan talagang wala kang pinaghihintay. So he helps me become more efficient when it comes to managing my time.”

“Mr. Dreamboy” and “Sabi Ko na Nga Ba” were among her hit songs in the late 80s. She did two albums while she was already a renowned teen star. And this is one the many things she missed. Fortunately, she sang the female version of “Sinasamba Kita,” the theme song and title of her new drama series at GMA 7.

“I’m very happy that I was given a chance to record the female version of this (Sinasamba Kita) new arrangement. Ang sarap din kasi si Janno Gibbs, who is a dear friend of mine, sang back up for me.”

Three weeks before “Bakekang” ended, Sheryl started taping “Sinasamba Kita.” Her weekdays are fully-booked with shootings and other engagements. But her weekends are fully dedicated to her daughter.

“Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I would do “Bakekang” and Tuesdays and Thursdays I do “Sinasamba Kita.” Kung ano man ang natitirang days or weekends sa akin I would spend that with my daughter or with my family. I would also spend that sleeping because I don’t really go out a lot. And I just moved to a new place siyempre mas gusto kong nag-aayos ng house.”

Sheryl Cruz and familyThough she’s not one to complain, Sheryl admitted that it’s not easy being an actress.

“Akala mo ang mga artista hindi napapagod. Mahirap din iyong trabaho because emotionally you have to be all there. Hindi puwedeng mainit ang ulo mo pagdating mo sa set if ever mayroon kang problems na nagba-bother sa iyo. Hindi mo maayos iyong mga scenes na hinihingi sa iyo.”

Sheryl plays the character that Vilma Santos did in “Sinasamba Kita” movie version. She is paired to Wendell Ramos and co-starred with Valerie Concepcion and Carlo Aquino.

Since she’s busy with her new program, Sheryl holds her summer activities.

“I’d like to go to the beach but right now I can’t. I would like to try the yoga lessons na ginagawa ni Jackie Lou (Blanco), but I’ll do it only if I have the energy kasi useless din na pagod ako tapos magyo-yoga ako. Hindi ko mararamdaman iyong high ng natural exercise na iyon.”

Fame do have a price. But Sheryl Cruz isn’t about to slow down anytime soon. After all, not everyone is given a second shot in this business so expect her to be around for a long time.

Lucky and Flo: Anti-Piracy Sniffing Dogs Hit Metro Manila

luckyflo.jpgLucky and Flo, the canine detectives is currently in the Philippines after making headlines in Malaysia last month where they sniffed-out 1.3 million pornographic and pirated discs, worth $3.3 million in different parts of the country.

The canine duo arrived in the country this weekend aiming to help the Optical Media Board (OMB) in it’s anti-piracy campaign. On monday, Lucky and Flo we’re dispatched to different malls in Makati,Mandaluyong, and Pasig to sniff-out pirated DVDs and CDs hidden in cartons and locked steel doors. Hot and Sizzling: Top 10 Male Sexiest Stars

Excel V. Dyquiangco

Summer is at its peak. And after giving you our take of the Sexiest Female Celebrities, we give you their counterpart in the male king: the top 10 sexiest male stars based on our own survey.

Sexy is defined not just by their well-sculpted bodies or six-packs abs. It is defined through their attitude and their confidence. And for these ten male celebrities, sexiness is defined as that and so much more.

Model-actor Andrew WolffAndrew Wolff – The commercial model turned bad boy of the entertainment industry stole hearts when he was linked to several actresses, like Gwen Garci and Ethel Booba. Despite this image, many are still clamoring that they want Andrew more onscreen. Who wouldn’t? He already has his face – and body – plastered on billboards all over EDSA. Now, they want to see him in their homes too.

Alfred Vargas – The good boy from Ateneo de Manila gave rise to a slew of screams and shrieks from ladies, who all want him. He started out as part of an onscreen triumvirate of Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales, but then blossomed to a full-blown hunk with substance in his many television and movie performances. The best of luck to you, Alfie!

Luis Manzano – Who would have thought that Vilma Santos’ first-born would be more than just a household name? And forward it a few years later, and “Lucky” has evolved to become Luis, and along with that, comes his good built. For Luis, he didn’t need to star in any sexy moves to show that he is sexy. One look at his piercing eyes and captivating smile, and that is sexy!

Dingdong Dantes – The skinny boy who started out in a string of goodie two-shoes performances proved that he does belong to this list. It was his stint in Encantadia that made him noticeable to the public, with his fighting skills and the armor he donned. Talk about sexy.

Dennis Trillo – Just one look at his intense eyes and mesmerizing look made the girls scream for Dennis Trillo. He didn’t have to bare his bod for him to become sexy – it all took great acting abilities and good relationships with his co-workers. Plus, the string of awards he won didn’t hurt either.Sexy male star Christian vasquez

Christian Vasquez – The hunk from Iloilo proved that he got it. When he appeared for a telephone company’s advertisement a couple of years back, no one ever dreamed that he would enter show business, and then show off his wares. But he did, and thanks to just more than his body, Christian is very versatile in every genre he is involved with.

Marc Nelson – The sportsman attitude probably did him in. He could do anything – from kayaking, bungee jumping, parasailing, scuba diving and many others. These activities make him sexy. Girls want a man to protect them, and with Marc around, they sure are protected.

Richard Gutierrez – The chubby little kid, who oftentimes plays Susan Roces and Eddie Gutierrez’s son on television now has metamorphosed into not just one budding actor, but a sexy budding actor. With television series such as Mulawin, Sugo, Captain Barbell and now, Lupin, Richard proved that he got what it takes to make girls fall in love with him.

Wendell Ramos – Just like Dingdong, Wendell was as skinny as a bat when first started out in the movies. Long years of absence later, he came back with a vengeance – and how! Now, the skinny Wendell has grown into a hunk, to say the least. And he is good in comedy, too.

Rafael Rosell – He first gained public notoriety when he landed the male role in a toothpaste commercial. Now a Bench model, Rafael proved that he could be as sexy as hell when he wants it. Plus, his killer smile and his wavy hair all add glitter to his identity, not just as an actor, but as the embodiment of male physique.

There you go. The sexiest brood in Philippine showbiz. If you have violent reactions, feel free to post your own choices here.

It seems like all is well for Claudine Baretto these days. She’s 6 months on the family way, has a new soap which is set to air this month and the best thing yet, a reconciliation.Yes folks, you heard it right she finally buried the hatchet with older sister Gretchen Baretto.

Claudine revealed in press conference of her new soap, Walang Kapalit, that a chance meeting with Gretchen in S&R grocery in Makati did it. ” It was very emotional lang, ‘yong pagkikita. Parang siya ata ‘yong unang nakakita sa akin. Mabilis, e. Mabilis ‘yong pangyayari.” she said..

Claudine did not want to divulge the details of the meeting. She said that she’s feeling better now that there’s foregiveness but she also added that things aren’t back to normal yet and that they were not getting together anytime soon.

“Were taking things slow. I guess we’ll just wait for another opportunity” adds Claudine.

It’s good that they settled their differences. But I just find it strange that this reconciliation happens when Claudine is promoting her new soap with Piolo Pascual. Good timing huh! What do you think?

Piolo Pascual Conquers Philippine Show Business

By Phoebe Dorothy Estelle

Piolo PascualNo doubt that Piolo Pascual is one of the most bankable and the most awarded actors today. The actor–singer who just received two best actor trophies for his impressive performance in the movie “Don’t Give Up On Us” is now back on primetime TV with a new drama offering, “Walang Kapalit.”

After all Toni Gonzaga’s TV Ad where she screamed “I Love You Piolo!” would not be so popular if the market did not agree with the message. The hunk is an admired film and TV artist, stage performer and popular product endorser.

Gone are the days when Piolo had minor roles. His Kapamilya career began as mainstay of the children show “ATBP.” But before that he was PJ of “That’s Entertainment,” that groundbreaking 80s/90s program of talent discoverer/host German Moreno.

His launching flick “Lagarista” did not hit well at the tills, but for that he was recognized as a good actor. Supposedly, at first he was the other party in the Judy Ann Santos and Wowie de Guzman’s relationship in “Esperanza” but as the story unfloded, they became the sought after love team of the new generation. They did several films- “Kahit Isang Saglit”, “Bakit “Di Totohanin”, “Till There Was You” and the most recent “Don’t Give Up On Us.”

The Judy Ann-Piolo team was also the certified top-rating tandem of ABS-CBN netwrok. Leading their fans to get dismayed when the love team love team did not blossom in real life. The actress now has a relationship with TV host/actor Ryan Agoncillo. Reportedly, an issue came between Piolo and Ryan that started last year. Piolo also denied that his friendship with Judy Ann was affected because of the gap.

“Juday (Judy Ann’ nickname) and I naman, even if we don’t talk, we’re okay. I mean, you know, wala naman kami sigurong atraso sa isa’t isa para mag-away o magkagalit, so wala kaming gap. We know each other too well to even fight over anything,” he said.

Philippine movie & TV actor Piolo PascualPiolo also admitted that he is looking forward to working with the award winning actress again.

“At the end of the day, trabaho lang ‘yan. Kung pepersonalin ng ibang tao, eh, huwag na lang kesa magkasiraan pa. Basta ako, ‘pag ibinigay sa akin, kung alam ko na kikita at professional lang, gagawin ko.”

When a love team is torn apart, most likely casualty is the guy but definitely Piolo’s show biz luck continue to flourish. His first film without Judy Ann was “9 Mornings” where he co-starred with former MTV VJ Donita Rose. Then his first solo series was “Mangarap Ka.” Both did well with the fans.

Dekada 70” was probably one of the highlights of his acting career. Because of that movie, he was the “Grand Slam” Best Supporting Actor in 2003. While he bagged his first FAMAS Best Actor for the movie ‘Milan’.

In Walang Kapalit, Piolo is paired with Claudine Barretto. The actor says he’s pleased to once again work with the six-month-old pregnant actress. He praised her kindness and generosity. For trivia, when “Milan” was an entry to an international award giving body, Claudine herself ironed Piolo’s unkempt “barong” before attending the award’s night.

“We all thought she’d be moody at masungit, pero mas bumait pa nga siya ngayong buntis. She’s very pleasant to work with, very caring. She’s also very generous. Kapag nagpabili ng pagkain, she buys food for everyone, “ Piolo commended.

Other than acting Piolo is also a well-known balladeer and concert artist. Under Star Records he has four albums that are certified record sales holders. He even had a sold out concert at the Araneta Coliseum in 2004. Recently, his “Heartthrobs” show with Sam Milby at Music Museum was another success.
